Clear koi pond water starts in the first filter chamber. The Mountain Tree Star Filter Brush is a koi pond filter brush that catches fish waste, uneaten food and plant debris before it reaches your biological media. Its star-shaped filaments also give beneficial bacteria plenty of surface to settle on. Koi Water Hyderabad supplies it in two lengths, 12 × 60 cm and 12 × 100 cm, for new pond builds and filter upgrades across India.
Why Koi Keepers Choose the Star Filter Brush
- Catches solid waste early. Traps coarse debris in the first chamber, so less of it reaches and clogs your biological media.
- More surface on every filament. Mountain Tree states its six-pointed star filament gives about four times the specific surface area of conventional single-thread brushes.
- Supports biological filtration. The filaments give beneficial microorganisms room to colonise inside your filter.
- Stainless-steel core. Twin support wires in 304/316 stainless steel, as specified by the manufacturer for corrosion resistance.
- Easy to hang and lift out. An injection-moulded open hook makes installation and cleaning simpler; plastic caps protect both ends.
- Built for long service. The manufacturer states a service life of more than five years under suitable conditions. Actual lifespan depends on your system and care.
- Safer materials. Mountain Tree states the brush is made with non-toxic materials that comply with EU RoHS standards.
How It Supports Mechanical and Biological Filtration
Mechanical filtration. As water enters the chamber, it passes through the dense filaments. Fish waste, uneaten food, decaying leaves and other coarse particles get caught along the way. Collecting these solids in one place keeps them out of downstream media and makes them easier to flush out.
Biological filtration. The same filaments give beneficial bacteria a large surface to grow on. With steady water flow, good oxygen levels and a mature filter, these bacteria help convert ammonia and nitrite into less harmful nitrate. The brush supports this process; it works alongside dedicated biological media, regular water testing and partial water changes, not in place of them.
The Star-Shaped Filament Advantage
Standard filter brushes use round, single-thread bristles. Mountain Tree's six-pointed star filament, which the manufacturer describes as its own patented design, adds ridges along the length of every fibre. Those extra edges give fine waste more places to cling and bacteria more surface to colonise. Mountain Tree rates this at about four times the specific surface area of a conventional single-thread brush.
The brush is also designed to be water-permeable, so water flows through it rather than being blocked, helping keep the chamber working evenly.
Where to Install It: The First Filter Chamber
The Star Filter Brush works best as a pre-filter in the first mechanical chamber, where dirty water from the pond enters. Hang brushes vertically in rows across the chamber so water has to pass through them, not around them.
It is especially useful in systems without a separate settlement chamber, vortex or pre-filter. It can also be used in an aquarium sump's overflow section, side filtration and other mechanical chambers.
Suitable Applications
- Koi ponds
- Backyard and garden ponds
- Fish farms
- Public aquariums
- Compatible freshwater aquarium sump filtration
- Water-treatment systems
Not recommended for seawater filtration.
Materials and Construction
- Filaments: fine polypropylene with a six-pointed star profile, set cylindrically around the core.
- Core: two stainless-steel support wires, specified as 304/316 stainless steel.
- Hook: injection-moulded suspension hook at the top for hanging and removal.
- Ends: protective plastic caps on both ends for safer handling.
- Materials: stated by the manufacturer to be non-toxic and EU RoHS compliant.
Specifications
| Size | Model number | Filament | Core wire |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 × 60 cm | MTF124060 | Polypropylene, star-shaped | 304/316 stainless steel |
| 12 × 100 cm | MTF1240100 | Polypropylene, star-shaped | 304/316 stainless steel |
Both sizes share the same filament, core and construction. Choose the length that fits your chamber depth so each brush hangs fully submerged.
Installation
- Measure the water depth of your first filter chamber and choose the brush length that will sit fully underwater.
- Rinse each brush with clean water before installing.
- Hang the brushes vertically by their hooks from a support bar or rod, in rows across the direction of water flow.
- Check that every brush is fully submerged and that the chamber is covered to keep out direct sunlight.
- Start the pump and confirm water flows through the brushes rather than around them.
Maintenance and Precautions
Routine care
- Check the brushes about once a month.
- Flush them when a significant amount of waste has built up. Mountain Tree suggests cleaning about every six months, depending on pond size, fish load and feeding.
- Rinse with a low-pressure water flow. Many koi keepers rinse in a bucket of pond water and clean a few brushes at a time, which helps preserve beneficial bacteria.
- The brush needs regular inspection and cleaning; it is not maintenance-free.
Precautions
- Keep the brush fully submerged and covered, away from direct sunlight or UV lighting.
- Do not use in strongly acidic or strongly alkaline water, which can corrode the stainless-steel wires.
- Not recommended for seawater filtration systems.
- When water temperature is near or below 0°C, do not move or clean the brush.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I place the Star Filter Brush?
In the first mechanical filter chamber, as a pre-filter. Hang the brushes vertically so incoming water passes through them before reaching your biological media.
Which size should I choose: 60 cm or 100 cm?
Both sizes have the same filament and construction; the difference is length. Choose the one that fits your chamber depth while staying fully submerged. If you are unsure, share your chamber dimensions with our team.
How many brushes do I need?
It depends on your chamber width, water depth and flow rate. Brushes should be arranged so water cannot bypass them. Send us your filter chamber size and we will help you work out a layout.
Will this brush clear my pond water or remove ammonia on its own?
No single product does that. The brush traps solid waste and provides surface for beneficial bacteria. Clear, healthy water depends on the whole system: biological media, oxygenation, sensible stocking, regular testing and maintenance.
How often should I clean it?
Check monthly and flush when waste builds up. The manufacturer suggests a full clean about every six months, depending on your pond.
Will the stainless-steel wire rust?
The core uses 304/316 stainless steel for corrosion resistance. Avoid strongly acidic or alkaline water and seawater, which can corrode the wire.
How long does it last?
Mountain Tree states a service life of more than five years under suitable operating conditions. Actual lifespan varies with water conditions, handling and maintenance.
Can I use it in an aquarium?
Yes, in compatible freshwater aquarium sump filtration. It is not recommended for marine (seawater) systems.
Is this the same as the Mountain Tree Spiral Filter Mat?
No. The Star Filter Brush is a hanging, cylindrical brush for the first filter chamber. The Mountain Tree Spiral Filter Mat is a separate filter media product. Ask us how the two can work together in your filter.
Do you offer custom sizes?
Mountain Tree offers customised sizes for different markets. Contact our team to check what can be sourced for your project.
